What was the main step you took to support employees in 2021?
In early 2021, after a whole year working fully remotely, we launched what we call the Rejuven8! Day. This is an extra paid day off quarterly for everybody here at 8x8 to set our “out of office” replies and take time to rest and recharge.
Another equally well-received action is our Ergonomics initiative, which is meant to support the wellbeing of our people and sits under the Work Great @ Home program. Our Facilities team plays a pivotal role in advocating the importance of having an ergonomic workspace and helping us all achieve that by providing specialized assessment and equipment (proper chairs, laptop and foot rests, etc.).
It may not seem much, but we are also happy to have introduced the advanced electronic signature at 8x8 in Romania, which enables us to stay on top of all the paperwork from the comfort of our homes… Or from wherever we are, actually. This is especially helpful and efficient when onboarding new colleagues, now more than ever since we are hiring across the country.
What were the initiatives as an employer in 2021 for the personal and professional development of your employees?
One initiative that we started preparing in 2021 to be launched in the new year was Start Strong, which was a series of employee workshops focused on various fitness- and wellness-related topics to kick off 2022 fresh and full of energy. More than 20 workshops were available to us, where wellbeing and nutrition trainers and several other external collaborators offered guidance and support on how to achieve a healthier, wealthier lifestyle for the body and the mind. We also had colleagues from different departments come and talk about their own experiences with creating new habits and making those stick. The program spanned two weeks and the whole experience felt like a good way to start the new year. It was great to meet with colleagues from across Europe and just enjoy those moments together. And, of course, all that was done with the help of our wonderful tech.
Diversity in the team - How is the mix of generations and nationalities approached in the company?
We value diversity, always have, it’s very much part of our culture here at 8x8. We are happy to welcome all generations and find this is a great source of our strength and drive toward innovation. In Romania, for example, we place great importance on our internship program. A great deal of our current team have joined the company after completing this program with us.
What are the lessons learned in the company after the 2 years of the pandemic?
I feel that our takeaway, as people, as a business, going through the pandemic over the past two years is that we live in a very unpredictable world that will always find ways to challenge and surprise us. Are those challenges always pleasant? Of course not, but surely we come out on the other end wiser. The capacity to adapt and handle the unpredictable is key, and, because our business is all about innovation, our minds become wired towards being creative and innovative in all aspects.
