BCR: Work-purpose for the employees through community involvement

We wanted to discover the working atmosphere at BCR so we spoke with Andreea Voinea, Chief Human Resources Officer.

President of HR Club, the largest association of HR professionals in Romania, recently, Andreea Voinea is also a co-founder of the only platform that facilitates practical education through matching between companies and high schools.

These experiences helped her a lot in contributing over the years to a supportive environment at BCR, which keeps the employees engaged and motivated all the time.

 

1. What do you find most attractive about the organizational culture of the company you represent? 

We embrace a "community approach". This is what defines us. Internally, we value communities like the Digital Experts League (3000 colleagues) for innovation and technology, and the Magic Advisors community (100 colleagues) for team well-being. 

Externally, our financial education program, Școala de bani, has impacted 1.000,000 people in the last 7 years, making it Romania's largest and most enduring public financial education program. We have over 1000 BCR employees volunteering as "money teachers".

Our culture fosters a community spirit, demonstrated in our collaborative strategy development with colleagues and clients. This community spirit has been crucial to our resilience in both good and challenging times. 

 

2. Many candidates choose wellbeing benefits nowadays. What were the initiatives of your company in 2023 for employee personal development? 

At BCR, we increasingly focus on personalization, tailoring reward and benefit systems to each colleague. Perhaps most importantly, we emphasize personalization in learning and motivation. We are witnessing a democratization of learning, allowing learning anytime, anywhere, and on any device.  

We've shifted from work-life balance to work-life fit. The pandemic brought uncertainty, altering people's perceptions of work relationships. An adaptation to the new context has occurred, with changing employee needs. It's crucial to customize our benefits so our people can genuinely choose and enjoy what suits them, whether it's learning experiences or flexible schedules. 

 

3. Many employees in the labor market are questioning the meaning of their work. How do you provide that „meaning” to people in your company? 

We prioritize connecting our colleagues to a broader purpose beyond their daily tasks. Our strong community involvement reflects our commitment in creating positive impacts. Many join our teams after participating in our CSR programs like Școala de bani or Școala de cariere, appreciating the sense of contribution fostered by our organization. In essence, our combination of a robust banking school, innovative and transparent culture, and a commitment to community impact often proves to be the decisive factor for prospective candidates. 

 

4. How is transparency promoted in your company? 

Transparency is a fundamental value we uphold. Seeking regular feedback from colleagues, we actively adapt and enhance our programs. Our approach to strategy is collaborative, moving away from a top-down model. 

By involving everyone in creating and implementing strategies through their daily tasks, we foster greater engagement, mutual respect, and a sense of pride. We've ensured that every colleague feels Valued@BCR by implementing a transparent compensation and benefits strategy that aligns with our flexible working policies. 

 

5. What is the most important for your team in recruiting a candidate? What attributes do you value most in a new colleague? 

In our People and Culture team, one of the foremost priorities is preparing individuals to seamlessly integrate technology into their roles while preserving their authentic human qualities. In response to this evolving trend, we've strategically incorporated competencies like empathy, curiosity, and a commitment to continuous learning. 

We increasingly emphasize attributes such as creative and analytical thinking, along with proficiency in utilizing technologies, especially data and AI. The ability to build and energize communities, underlined by the importance of community management skills, is now a highly valued aspect in our recruitment process.
